Safari requires you to first set up your google account within "Internet Accounts"
1. System Preferences, Internet Accounts,
2. Click the "+" to add an account, and "Google" in the right-hand column.
3. When the "goto Safari for authentication screen" returns, click [Safari].
4. This will take you to a Google authentication screen within Safari, that will ask you to authenticate".
