Period Delta lets you compare a binder's current period against any other period — not just the one immediately before it — and see the change account by account. It's built for CAS and monthly-close work, where period-over-period comparison is part of every review.
What is Period Delta?
Period Delta is a comparison view for Client Accounting Services (CAS) engagements. Pick a base period and a comparison period, and Tallyfor shows each account's balance in both periods along with the delta — the difference between them.
The key difference from a standard prior-period comparison is that the two periods do not have to be next to each other. You can compare across any gap you need.
Why compare non-contiguous periods?
Month-over-month comparisons are useful, but a lot of review work calls for comparing periods that aren't adjacent. For example:
Year over year — this June against last June, to normalize for seasonality.
Across a gap — this quarter against the same quarter two years ago, or Q1 against Q3.
Before and after a change — the month a new revenue stream or entity started against a month well before it.
Against a known-good baseline — any working period against a closed, reviewed period you trust.
How to run a Period Delta comparison
Open the CAS binder you want to review.
Open Period Delta from the binder's reporting area.
Choose your base period — the period you're reporting on.
Choose the comparison period — any other period, adjacent or not.
Review the results. Each account shows its amount in both periods and the delta between them.
Reading the results
The comparison lists your accounts with the balance for each of the two periods and the delta between them, so movements stand out at a glance. Use it to spot unexpected swings, confirm expected changes, and catch accounts that moved when they shouldn't have — before you finalize the period.
