Display Settings: Binder View Controls

A binder's view controls in one Display Settings popup on the trial balance header — plus collapsing and expanding each account-type section.

Every control that changes how you're looking at a binder now sits behind a single Display Settings button on the trial balance header. Nothing about the underlying data changes — these are view controls, and they apply to the binder you're in.

What changed

View controls are now consolidated into one Display Settings popup.

Three practical improvements come with the change:

  • A cleaner header. One button instead of a row of them, so the trial balance itself gets the space.

  • The button is always available. Previously it only appeared once accounts had been imported. In a brand-new CAS binder that meant you couldn't pick a period until you'd imported data — which was backwards, since you often want to choose the period first. The button is now there from the moment the binder is created.

  • The active CAS period shows in the header. A compact pill displays which period you're working in, so you can see it at a glance without opening the popup.

Opening Display Settings

Open any binder and click Display Settings on the trial balance header. The popup opens over the binder; your selections apply immediately and the popup closes when you click away.

What's in the popup

The controls you see depend on the binder type and on whether the binder has accounts in it yet.

CAS controls

In a Client Accounting Services binder:

  • Active period — which month or quarter you're working in. This replaces the old period dropdown that sat on the binder header. Changing it switches the trial balance, journal, and workpapers to that period.

  • Cadence — whether the binder runs monthly or quarterly.

Period and view controls

  • End-of-period date — the effective date the view is reported as of.

  • Tax / Financial view — switch between the tax presentation of the trial balance and the financial (book) presentation.

Controls that need accounts

These only make sense once there's a trial balance to display, so they stay hidden in an empty binder and appear as soon as accounts exist:

  • Standard order — display accounts in Tallyfor's standard ordering rather than as imported.

  • Zero-balance accounts — show or hide accounts with a zero balance.

  • M-1 — show or hide the M-1 (book-to-tax difference) presentation.

If you've just created a binder and expected to see these, import or connect a trial balance first and they'll appear.

Collapsing and expanding account-type sections

A long trial balance used to be a single scroll: reaching an Expenses account meant scrolling past every Asset, Liability and Equity row on the way down. Each account-type header now carries a chevron that folds that whole section away.

How to use it

  • Click the chevron on any account-type header — Assets, Liabilities, Equity, Revenue, Expenses, or Property Lines in a Multi-Property binder — to collapse that section.

  • The header itself always stays on screen, so click the same chevron again to expand it.

  • Sections are independent. Collapse Assets and Liabilities and leave Expenses open, or fold everything except the one section you're working in.

  • Nested tax-category groups collapse with their parent section, so a folded section is genuinely folded — no orphaned child rows left behind.

It works the same way in both the Tax View and the Financial View, and it combines with the other view controls — hiding zero-balance accounts and collapsing a section together will get a long trial balance down to something you can read on one screen.

It does not change your numbers, reports, or exports

Collapsing a section is presentational only. It changes which rows are drawn on screen and nothing else:

  • Reports render in full. With Assets collapsed on screen, the Balance Sheet still shows Assets in full and the Trial Balance Report still prints every row. Grand totals and Total Assets are unchanged.

  • The Excel export is unaffected. It reads the complete account list, not what's currently on screen.

  • Workpapers stay attached. Documents attached to accounts inside a collapsed section keep their order and stay with their accounts.

Does it stick, and does my team see it?

No, on both counts — deliberately. Collapse state is per-session and yours alone:

  • Reloading the page re-expands every section.

  • A colleague reviewing the same binder sees it fully expanded. Nobody's section folds shut mid-review because you collapsed it on your screen.

This is the opposite of the settings in the Display Settings popup, which are saved with the binder and shared. If you'd like collapse state to persist for you between visits, tell our support team — it's a per-user preference we can look at.

Do these settings affect anyone else?

Display Settings are per-binder view controls — they change how the binder is presented, not the accounts, balances, or journal entries behind it. Switching between the Tax and Financial view, or hiding zero-balance accounts, changes nothing about the data or your exports. Collapsed sections are narrower still: per-session and visible only to you.
