What is Tallyfor Kickstart?
Tallyfor Kickstart is a way to quickly get a Business Tax Return completed.
With a few clicks, Kickstart will set up several steps all at once. It will:
- Create a Client
- Set the Return Type
- Create a current year Tax Binder
- Choose the appropriate Tax Categories
- Make certain M-1 Adjustments
Currently available for Xero and QuickBooks Online.
If you do not see the button “Kickstart from QBO”, please contact support@tallyfor.com and we will enable it.
Kickstart for QuickBooks Online (QBO)
- From the Client screen, click “Kickstart from QBO”
If you’re not logged into QBO already, you’ll be asked to log into your QBO account.
- From the dropdowns select an un-connected company. Kickstart is only applicable for QBO companies that have not yet been added as a client or connected.
- We will pre-fill the company information from your QBO details. You can edit here before clicking “Onboard Client”
- We will use QBO's "Account Subtype" aka "Detail Type" to set up your preliminary Tax Categories.

Where are you getting the Client ID?
We pre-fill the ClientID from the Client Name. You can edit it later.
How does Kickstart know the Accounting Method (Basis eg Cash or Accrual)? Can i change it?
We determine the Basis form the QBO Settings. Currently, we do not allow you to change the basis upon initiating a Kickstart. However, you can change it in QBO before initiating a Kickstart.
What is the QBO "Account Subtype" aka "Detail Type"?
The "Account Subtype" is also called the "Detail Type". QBO typically uses the term "Account subtype" in the context of Reports uses the term "Detail Type" in Settings, Data and API contexts. For Tallyfor's use, these two terms are the same.

Why are QBO "Account Subtype" aka "Detail Type" important to Tallyfor?
Tallyfor uses QBO Account Subtypes to Assign Tax Categories. This will give you a good starting point for your Tax Categories.
How can I edit the assigned "Account Subtype" aka "Detail Type" in QBO?
You can edit Account Subtypes from the QBO "Account List" Report.
Kickstart for Xero
- From the Client screen, click “Kickstart from Xero”
- If you’re not logged into Xero already, you’ll be asked to log into your Xero account.
- From the top dropdown, please select an un-connected organization. Kickstart is only applicable for Xero orgs that have not yet been added as a client or connected.
- Select the organization you wish to onboard.
- Once you have selected an organization, click “Allow Access”
- We will pre-fill the org information from your Xero details. You can edit here before clicking “Onboard Client”
- We will use Xero report codes to set up your preliminary Tax Categories. You will see you client's Balance Sheet
Kickstart for Xero FAQ
Can I use this with an “already connected” Xero org?
No. If you’ve already connected an org to Xero, please create a new Binder and pull Trial Balance data as you normally have done.

Yes, when manually connecting Xero on a new binder, upon Tallyfor's "Select Org" modal, you will be given the option to Apply Report Codes.

Xero Report Codes are a standardized set of ID’s that help you identify the purpose of a COA account.
Why are Xero Report Codes important to Tallyfor?
Tallyfor uses Report Codes to Assign Tax Categories. This will give you a good starting point for your Tax Categories.
How can I edit the assigned Xero Report Codes in Xero?
In Xero, there are two ways you can edit Xero Report Codes. The below screenshots are in the Xero app.
On the Organization level. Navigate to: Accounting>Advanced> Report Codes
On the Chart of Accounts Template level in Xero HQ. Navigate to: Xero HQ>Practice
What are the original Tallyfor Kickstart mappings for Xero Report Codes to Tallyfor Tax Categories?
